This is normal. Nothing is wrong. Most image viewers don't support CMYK colour. That's why it doesn't look right. Also note that most office/home inkjet printers can't print CMYK files either - they are set up to print RGB files. CMYK images are mostly used for print technologies which require separations, such as offset litho or screen printing.
The design is a grayscale image made in Photoshop RGB mode. I tried some things: 1/ converting the image in Image Mode > Grayscale and then dragging & dropping in the CMYK template. 2/ converting the image by Edit > Convert to profile > CMYK and dragging & dropping in the CMYK template. Aditional tip. You can convert an image directly from RGB to grayscale, but you also can try using a specific channel. Imagine this photo: A blue sky as a background with a tree with red leaves as your main subject.
The most important difference about these color modes is that RGB is for display on electronic screens (computers, TVs, cameras, smartphones, etc), while CMYK is for printing (magazines, photographs, product packaging, direct-to-garment, etc).
